We actively promote equality and diversity in our workforce to ensure that individuals are treated fairly. As a company, we recognise that every employee has a basic right to enjoy a working environment that promotes dignity and respect and recognises and values equally, the differences and contributions among employees.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a core Nicholas O’Dwyer value, enabling the company to work towards a sustainable planet. Our teams are dedicated to sustainable design and the delivery of critical infrastructure projects aligned closely with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and UNSDG6 ‘Clean Water and Sanitation’ in particular. We have baselined our carbon footprint and committed to a 30% reduction by 2030.

As an RSK company, our sustainability strategy is driven by the group’s five pillars of sustainability and outlines performance objectives against them. These pillars include the environment and communities, our people and ethics, our clients and suppliers, our financial and governance and our safety, health and quality.

We work with our clients to embed designs using risk-based approaches to adapt investment to climate change and mitigate and reduce carbon use.

Innovation and technology

Advances in technology and the digital world enable quicker, smarter and more sustainable working practices. We have embraced the use of smart technology on our projects thus reducing our carbon footprint and having greater remote accessibility and operational efficiency.

Through our innovation and technology group, we promote the adoption of new ideas and better ways of working and have formed strong links with third-level institutions to research our ideas further.

Our history

Founded in 1932, Nicholas O’Dwyer has been an innovator from its inception. Before establishing the company, our eponymous founder was chief engineering inspector in the Department of Local Government, a position he held since the Irish state’s foundation in 1922. He represented Ireland on a League of Nations Committee on public health engineering and acted on the League’s European advisory committee on rural hygiene. Highly active professionally, Nicholas served as president of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland from 1934 to 1936.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Nicholas O’Dwyer designed much of Ireland’s water services infrastructure, and brought that technical expertise when the business expanded into the global arena.

We started operating in Africa in the 1960s and our first projects included overseeing the Lusaka (Zambia) Water Supply Scheme. Since then, we have worked in many countries across the African Continent. Our international business continues to be a pioneer in the developing world, and we are constantly reinventing ourselves to take account of new opportunities that arise including our latest expansion into the middle east and far east markets. It is this readiness to constantly look to the next chapter that helps us to future-proof the company against the challenges that may occur in any or all our more traditional markets.
