This Kerry-based project aimed to assess options for a sustainable approach to managing the flood risk and drainage aspects along the Cashen Estuary and to provide a cost-effective and environmentally acceptable engineering solution that works with the drainage systems in the area.

The preferred sustainable solution for design was a series of polder pumping stations to assist low-tide drainage during animal grazing periods (March to October).

Innovative sustainable solutions were achieved through designing wind-powered pumping stations on the smaller polders, with modular designed electric pumping stations for the larger polders, which enabled same pump replacement and refitting across the scheme.
